As we have seen in recent months, aircraft accidents occur both on and off airports around the world each and every day. No community or airport - large or small- is immune to an aircraft disaster.  More than ever, there are new challenges and problems to the international Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) profession.  New aircraft such as the new Airbus A380 and Boeing 747-800, crowded airport terminals, ever increasing air traffic, aircraft filled to capacity, and the ever-present fire and terrorism threat to your airport facilities. These challenges create an ever- growing responsibility for airport and municipal fire and emergency response professionals worldwide.

Airport Fire Services around the world are still facing problems with inadequate equipment, lack of adequate firefighting personnel and a lack of funding for proper or mandated training. Airport Fire Service budgets are being downsized, and in some cases eliminated altogether in favor of outsourcing these duties or spending monies for other airport projects. The price of jet fuel has caused many airlines to reduce or even eliminate services to many smaller airports.  ARFF services across the world are being dramatically effected by these and other factors.

Airport Fire Chiefs must justify  - and practically have to beg - for every request from airport management. Do you have to practically beg to attend this conference?

Do-nothing government bureaucrats that regulate airport fire protection standards are light years behind the times in upgrading them, and continue to drag their feet or refuse to address the problems.  Left in the middle of it all is the airport firefighter who has to perform the difficult and dangerous job with little or no support when an aircraft accident occurs.  Airport Firefighting professionals must not only be be proactive and forward thinking in their need for continuous and advanced training, but also in the development of new services that provide a greater productivity value of the airport fire department to both the airport and the public it serves by widening its'
duties and responsibilities.
